Was Your Child Arrested? Contact Pima County Attorney Kevin J. Oursland

The juvenile court system is different from the criminal court for adults. The emphasis of juvenile court is on rehabilitation, not punishment. The aim is to give kids the guidance and assistance they need so they won't get into trouble as they get older.

This does not mean that your child will not face serious consequences if the court makes a finding of juvenile delinquency. Boys in Nebraska can be sent to the detention facility in Kearney and girls can be sent to Geneva. Depending on the offense, your child could even be tried in adult court and face adult consequences.

As a former state prosecutor and a juvenile crimes defense attorney with more than 15 years of experience, my goal is to help you navigate the juvenile justice system so that the emphasis remains on rehabilitation. I offer a free initial consultation to discuss your child's juvenile charges case.

Juvenile Offenses

Juveniles can be charged with the same types of offenses as adults. I represent juveniles who are charged with all types of criminal offenses, including:
  • Status offenses, such as not going to school
  • Shoplifting and theft
  • Minor in possession of drugs
  • Underage consumption
  • Burglary
  • Assault
  • Vandalism
  • Sex crimes
  • Murder
Parents can be charged with neglect or abuse if they are found to have put their child at risk. In the most extreme cases, the court can take jurisdiction of your children and terminate your parental rights.

Juvenile law cases can be very complex because of the number of parties involved. In addition to the court system, you may need to deal with the Department of Health and Human Services, Child Protective Services and a guardian ad litem (GAL). Having an experienced attorney involved can help you navigate the system and protect your rights.
