Tucson Criminal and DUI Defense Lawyer
My name is Kevin J. Oursland. I am a criminal defense lawyer in Tucson, Arizona. I graduated from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1992. Long interested in criminal law and procedure, I joined the Platte County public defender's office in Columbus, Nebraska. There I tried and won my first jury trial -- a not guilty verdict for a young man charged with assault. More trials followed, and with every trial I continued to develop my skills as a trial attorney. In 1997, I became the York County deputy county attorney, a position I held for two years. As a deputy county attorney, I successfully prosecuted hundreds of cases, including many jury trials. In 2000, I switched gears and became an administrative hearing officer with the Department of Motor Vehicles in Lincoln, Nebraska. But it wasn't long before my desire to work with people facing criminal charges and my interest in constitutional issues led me back to criminal defense. It is in that capacity that I believe I can do the most good for society by fighting for the rights of individuals charged with crimes. For four years I worked with one of Nebraska's most accomplished criminal defense attorneys, Kirk Naylor, Jr. In April, 2006, taking all that I had learned in the past decade, I opened my own successful criminal law practice in Lincoln. In October, 2011, my wife Mary and I moved to Tucson to be closer to Mary's parents and to take advantage of Arizona's wonderful weather. In November, 2011, the Arizona State Supreme Court recognized me as an appropriate individual to practice law in the state and awarded me my license. Shortly thereafter, I opened my office in downtown Tucson.

I am committed to providing the best defense possible to the citizens of Tucson and southern Arizona. Preparation is the key to mounting a successful defense to criminal charges. I approach every case I handle as if it is going to trial. That way, if trial is necessary, I will be totally prepared.
I believe in giving each of my clients the best defense possible. I understand that being charged with a crime is an extremely stressful and often embarrassing situation to find yourself in. For these reasons, I limit the number of clients I have at one time so that I can give each case the attention it deserves. If you hire me as your criminal or DUI defense attorney, you will work directly with me from beginning to end.
I am licensed to practice before all state and municipal courts in Arizona, the United States District Court of Arizona, as well as the Nebraska Supreme Court, the U.S. District Court of Nebraska, and the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. I am a member of the Pima County Bar Association, the Arizona State Bar Association, the Federal Bar Association, and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers.
My Promise to You
As your defense attorney, I promise to take the time to listen to your needs and your concerns. I will explain the law and process for the legal matter you are facing, as well as all of the options available to you. Together we can then make a decision that will best fulfill your needs.
Some defense attorneys take the approach that they are the lawyer and they know what is best. I prefer to use the collaborative approach with my clients. I will explain the law to you and share as much information about your case as possible. I will show you the state's discovery, so you will know all of the evidence the state prosecutor has against you. By keeping you well-informed, you can become my partner in helping me defend you.
In every criminal or DUI case there are things that we cannot control. The criminal justice system can be extremely frustrating. Part of my job is to help you through that process, and I will do my best to make the experience as painless as possible for you. I may not have all of the answers, and in some cases you may not like what I have to say, but I will always be honest with you and strive to do what is best for you. I am not perfect. I am a competent and conscientious lawyer, but I am also human, which means I sometimes make mistakes. But if I do make a mistake, I will correct it if I find it or you point it out.
I am committed to providing you with personal service. As your attorney, I will handle your case from beginning to end. No lawyer can promise an outcome or give you odds on what will happen with your case. However, with more than 15 years of criminal law experience and a background as a state prosecutor, I can evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the state's case against you. That experience enables me to create a strong defense.
